Afforestation, forest management and sustainable use
Reforestation of a mixed forest on 6.5 hectares of land in Panama, with simultaneous sustainable management of parts in this area in network of projects, coordinated by ForestFinance.
We believe that not only do the forests need to be protected, but furthermore, concepts need to be developed that ensure economic management of land in harmony with nature. The focus of the agroforestry project is therefore to build a permanently healthy ecosystem, from which timber is only removed during reasonable periods. Ideally, after a certain period (usually several decades), the yields will exceed the costs of cultivation, afforestation and forest management. This only works because it is one of many areas that ForestFinance jointly manages.
In addition to the productive areas, there are always protected areas that are not cultivated. The management allows on average logging only after 25 years. Timber such as teak, mahogany, zapatero, indigenous cedar tree, amarillo, rosewood or Panamanian almond tree are cultivated here. Apart from the proceeds earned through this cultivation, seed materials and CO2 certificates are also sold.
Panterito has contractually guaranteed that the areas will not be re-used in other ways in the future (e.g. for more intensive cultivation or development), but that the resulting mixed forest remains in place permanently.
We are planning our own reforestation project in Cyprus and are still looking for experts and partners to exchange knowledge and implement the project. Although you can also support us with just providing a helping hand or with in-kind or financial donations.
