On the Human Development Index, the country ranks 174 out of 189. About <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/331836451_An_Analysis_of_the_Causes_of_Deforestation_in_Malawi_A_Case_of_Mwazisi\">33,000 ha of forest land is lost every year<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But where there is a need, there is a market and thus an income opportunity through sustainable alternatives. Pine has the great advantages of growing quickly to provide timber for building and also enabling individual branches to be coppiced for firewood after a comparatively short time. The smallholders in Ripple Africa\u2019s program also grow pine but also grow indigenous trees and fruit trees. They receive seeds and training and then take over all the work steps themselves. Ripple Africa works closely with the farmers to monitor how the trees are growing and thus achieves high survival rates: In the 2019\/2020 planting period, 94% of the seeds supplied were planted in the field as seedlings.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the One Crew | One Tree project, Panterito is participating by planting 3,200 trees:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>3,200 trees<\/li>\n<li>approx. 3 ha area<\/li>\n<li>Sowing spring 2021 &#8211; planting in the open ground winter 2021\/2022<\/li>\n<li>expected compensation: approx. 300 t CO2 over 15-20 years<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/section><\/div><\/div><!--close column table wrapper. These include the <a href=\"https:\/\/afr100.org\/sites\/default\/files\/Malawi_NFLR_Strategy_FINALv2.pdf\">National Forest Landscape Restoration Strategy<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/wri-public-data.s3.amazonaws.com\/Restoration\/Restoration_Malawi_Charcoal-Strategy_lowq.pdf\">National Charcoal Strategy<\/a>, and the establishment of the <a href=\"https:\/\/energypedia.info\/wiki\/Improved_Cookstoves_Programs_in_Malawi_%28EnDev%29\">National Cooking Stove Steering Committee<\/a>.
